net zero energy school
Designed by SOM, The Kathleen Grimm School for Leadership and Sustainability is the first net-zero energy school in New York City and one of the first of its kind in the world. The cutting-edge building will harvest as much energy from renewable on-site sources as it uses. As NYC’ s first “Sustainability Lab”, this exploration into civic sustainability will offer an energy-use reduction of 50% over a standard New York public school.
The team developed a student/building interface system, allowing students to monitor their class’s energy use. As an extension of that tool-set, we also created integrated environmental graphics, “Sustainability Tour” and building signage system.
